The Department of Mathematics, established in the year 2002 and currently headed by Dr. Chethan A.S., has evolved into a team of Twenty well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members out of which eighteen are doctorate holders and two are pursuing their Ph.D. programme.
The department conducts courses in Applied Mathematics for BE students and M.Tech. students. The department also identifies students who need extra mentoring in mathematics and conducts remedial classes in order to enhance their performances. The streamlined and sincere efforts by the team have resulted in the department consistently obtaining excellent performances in examinations.
The department of Mathematics is a recognized VTU Research Centre for the Ph.D programme.
To empower students to excel in engineering and research by imparting equitable Mathematics education of the highest quality.

The Research Centre of the Department of Mathematics, BMSIT&M, established in 2005 under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), has been a strong pillar in promoting advanced mathematical research and analytical thinking across engineering and applied science domains. With a team of 9 subject specialists recognized as research guides, the department actively nurtures high-quality research in both pure and applied mathematics, contributing significantly to interdisciplinary problem-solving.
Since its inception, the research centre has focused on thrust areas such as Queueing Theory, Fluid Mechanics, Graph Theory, Numerical Techniques, Fuzzy Automata Theory, Topology, and Approximation Theory. To date, 4 research scholars have successfully completed their Ph.D. degrees, while 6 scholars are currently pursuing full-time and part-time doctoral research under the guidance of the department faculty. These scholars work on contemporary problems with applications in engineering systems, communication networks, traffic and service systems, fluid flow modeling, optimization, uncertainty modeling, and computational mathematics. The research outcomes aim to provide strong theoretical foundations and efficient mathematical models for addressing real-world challenges in science, technology, and industry.
The Department of Mathematics at BMSIT&M also plays a vital role in fostering a vibrant research culture at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students are encouraged to engage in mathematical modeling, algorithm development, simulation, and data-driven analysis, often aligned with applications in civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer science engineering. Under the mentorship of experienced faculty, students actively participate in research-oriented projects, conferences, workshops, and paper publications, strengthening their analytical and problem-solving skills.
The department maintains a consistent record of research publications in reputed national and international journals, conference proceedings, and edited volumes. Faculty members are involved in collaborative research, interdisciplinary initiatives, and funded research activities, contributing mathematical expertise across domains. Through its sustained emphasis on rigor, innovation, and application-oriented learning, the Department of Mathematics, BMSIT&M, continues to support the institute’s vision of excellence in research, higher education, and societal impact.
