The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 2002, by Dr. B. E. Ramachandran and presently headed by Dr. Ramakrishnappa T from 2024. The department currently consists of a team of 12 devoted faculty members for teaching, of which 11 of them are doctorates.

The Research Centre at the Department of Chemistry, BMSIT&M, was established under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). Since its inception, the centre has fostered quality research in areas such as Material science , battery applications environmental applications . Guided by a team of experienced supervisors, the centre currently hosts several part-time and full-time Ph.D. scholars working on interdisciplinary topics. Research outcomes aim to address real-world challenges in science and technology.
The Department of Chemistry at BMSIT&M fosters a strong culture of research and innovation, encouraging research s to tackle real-world challenges through hands-on, socially relevant projects. The department averages over 25 publications annually in reputed journals and has also received funded project support from DST and VGST further strengthening its research credentials.
